NCI504 Alternative techniques
Evaluation
When I first began this module I had to produce a plan of how and what I was going to create my character with in a new resource, along with making a list of my strengths and weakness’s I could work through.
Among my list of strengths was being able to trace poses, add in the required details and to create a fully informed backstory which only took me a few days to come up with, along with changing a few scenes in the plot to improve them.
As for my weakness’s there is copying an exact mirror image on to the opposite side of the page e.g. one of grills eyes are slightly wonkier than the other, shaping a character in illustrator with the curving tool, producing a background with the angles and distances being a little out of sync and there’s working with unfamiliar styles that are mainly out of my comfort zone.
To help overcome these matters for future projects I have also written a few examples of how I can improve these obstacles. Next time I’ll use a light box more often to help mirror copy an image, find more time to practice with the tools in illustrator to form a character more professionally, practice at producing backgrounds more to adjust distances and angles and search for more new styles that would be appealing to produce my character.
Along with using the traditional techniques in Photoshop, another example of using a different technique was that I tried to use the tools in the illustrator software to form Grills body by combining both shapes and curved lines. Personally I believe I could of done better with building him, by looking at my first attempt I feel like I have sort of rushed it a bit, but as you can see in my second attempt i have greatly improved on remodelling him.
Another technique I had planned to produce him with was by forming him as a 3D model in Cinema4D, however I realized it would have taken too long to build him along with adding in all the extra details. I was even thinking of doing a watercolour picture on a whim but couldn’t find the materials in time.
To help understand the process i went through i produced a making of guide about how i created four samples, which problems i encountered and how i overcame them.

Overall I have found this project quite helpful and useful, laying out my strengths and weakness’s that need to be improved a lot more, which I will find time to do at some point.
Twice weekly report
After these past two weeks I have had
to search for different ways I can produce my character with. There are many
opportunities for me to choose from such as Photoshop, hand drawn sketches,
water colouring, illustrator, cinema4d, collaging and clay modelling. Due to the amount of time I have, I’ll reduce
my options to just using Photoshop, Illustrator and an original hand drawn
sketch since I am more familiar with the software’s and it’ll take too long use
the other resources.
Swot analysis
- Should of explored and used more different alternatives such as 3D modelling, water-colouring or colour pastels.
- Improved development in using the tools in illustrator for form Grill.
